The New Spirituality
in Healthcare
The Influence of Eastern Religion

As a chaplain working in a state hospital as well as hospice, I can say from firsthand experience that the role of spiritual care in medicine is rapidly changing. Chaplains are no longer free to pray with patients and their families, read comforting passages of scripture or provide Bible based Christian counsel unless it is specifically requested by the patient. Otherwise, chaplains have been limited to the role of a quasi-spiritual kind of social worker.

Instead, nurses are strongly encouraged to provide spiritual care through the practice of alternative medicine which is largely based on Buddhism and Hinduism. Three of these therapies are Healing Touch, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch. All are "touch therapies" and mimic the Christian practice of "laying on of hands" and prayer for healing.

The frightening things is that even Christian nurses aren't aware of the spiritual basis connected with the alternative therapies they are being trained in and urged to practice. That is why I am writing, "The Occult Invasion of Health Care: The Changing face of Spirituality In Medicine".
